Step Three: Explore

The third step is exploration. Once you have developed observation and presence with your protective parts, you can begin to explore the younger, vulnerable parts of your internal system. This involves witnessing and understanding their history, what they had to go, their needs, and the beliefs and emotions that burden them. By exploring these young, wounded parts, you can help them release all of the burdens they’ve been holding.

Tools we’ll use as needed:

  • Awareness practice: unburdening

  • Stretching and shaking

  • Verbalization and emotional expression

  • Self-soothing
